Fall is less than 20 days away, the leaves are just about ready to change, OU move-in starts today, the streets are packed, and we're gearing up for (if I may say so) a very impressive season here at ARTS/West.

Transition time for sure so we wish our intern Katie all the best of luck-- she is embarking on her grown-up journey and will now be found interning at the Cleveland Playhouse. God speed Katie! We already miss our own "basement cat" Nate but we know he will be the best Lost Flamingo President and wish him the best for the up-coming school year. Jess and Drew will stay with us for awhile and Ashley just plain trapped! We have all just about lost our minds! We're taking "doing more with less" to heart! So look what we have coming up!

Women of Appalachia Project presents "Women Speak" A celebration of female literary and performing artists

September 16, at 6 p.m. the Women of Appalachia project will present "Women Speak, Autumn 2010", an evening of story, poetry and song, in the ARTS/West performance space. The event is the third presentation of spoken artistry, presented by the WOAP, created and performed by women living in Southeast Ohio.

Founder/curator of the project, Kari Gunter-Seymour points out that many people have an image of an Appalachian woman, and they look down on her. The Women of Appalachia Project encourages participation from women of diverse backgrounds, ages and experiences to come together, to embrace the stereotype, to show the whole woman; beyond the superficial factors that people use to judge her. This fall's event will highlight the work of 13 writers, singers and performers, from Athens, Meigs, Hocking and Morgan counties, providing the community with a unique opportunity to experience a very intimate glimpse inside the lives and culture of each artist.

"Spoken art is by its very nature a transient art.," says Gunter-Seymour. "Seconds after the artist's thoughts are spoken, they are just that quickly gone. Yet in that quiet powerful moment we may hear something that tickles across our senses, like it belongs to us - translating the spoken into the visual within our minds."

The presentation is scheduled from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m, with a reception immediately following. ARTS/West is located at 132 West State Street in Athens, Ohio 45701. ARTS/West, 132 W. State St. is hosting a screening of the local independent film of The Other House, directed by Steve Fetsch and produced by Amy Abercrombie, on September 17 at 7:00pm. Tickets to the film screenings are $4 and may be purchased at the door.

The novel, The Other House, was written by Rebecca Hooper Eastman sometime before 1937, the year of her death. Seventy years later, it was privately published by her granddaughter, Amy Abercrombie, and is now an independent, full-length movie. Based on the Holdens and the Hoopers, the story centers on a beautiful young woman forced to flee to the South when a young man dies in a duel over her. She moves in with her sister in Walpole, NH where she encounters colorful relatives, two villains, and a handsome young architect who wins her heart.

The result of two years of filming in the culturally-rich Athens, OH is a striking motion picture that will surely please movie-goers everywhere. "The novel and the movie have dominated my life for nearly twenty years," admits granddaughter Abercrombie. "And I am so grateful to all who contributed to making the movie so fine." She adds that she wishes the entire country could see it and she plans to enter it into as many film festivals as possible.

Prenatal yoga helps mothers gain a deeper awareness of their bodies while helping to alleviate some discomforts pregnancy can bring. World Citizen Culture Drumming class is an exploration into the rhythms and cultures of West African. We study traditional Mande djembe(hand drum) and djun djun(bass drums) arrangements. Students in the class will learn hand techniques, poly-rhythmic percussion harmony, solo techniques for djembe, drum tuning and arrangements for traditional rhythms from Ivory coast, Congo and the African Diaspora. Hiya there world… Katie here! Who am I and why should you read this fabulous blog I am writing about ARTS/West? Well probably because I’m awesome and pretty entertaining but mostly because I’m an intern at ARTS/West this summer! Huzzah!

I’m not exactly sure how to start a blog so I’ll just jump right in! Since the beginning of my internship at ARTS/West in June I’ve witnessed OVST’s theater camp production of Jennifer Hickok DeFratis’s play “Fury Tails with a Twist!”, The Appalachian Progressive Education Center (APE Center) plays “The Enchanted Necklace” and “Report the Past”, Athens Premier of the film “The Other House”, and the gallery opening featuring the beautiful art work of Kenneth Taylor… and that’s not all!

Recently a lot of my time has been spent reading the 20 play submissions we received for Humble Play! That’s a lot of reading but I’ve only got 3 more left to finish! I’ve learned a lot about what to look for in a play by talking with Emily Prince. She has a lot of real world experience and her stories are very helpful! I love hearing about all the plays she has read for past jobs and the tricks they used to weed out scripts quickly. For example, if a show had a “Noooooooooooooooooo!” within the first 5 pages it was automatically thrown out! (Never fear if you’ve written a script with this included, we understand that our submissions are works in progress!)

I have also been slowly but surely organizing paperwork from past years of Humble Play! (I swear one day it will be done!) I also started reading a series of books called “Focusing the Light; The Art and Practice of Planning.” They were developed by the Ohio Arts Council with support from the National Endowment for the Arts. I have not gotten through all of the volumes, but what I have read I learned a lot from. The first volume was called “Arts Advocacy and Planning.” It was all about “an overview of the public value of the arts and arts education.”

In addition to all this, I and the other interns have had tutorials with Emily Prince on how exactly a script turns into a play on a professional level. We also discussed readings and staged readings and Not-for-Profit Theater! Let us know if you’re interested in hearing about it and maybe an up-coming blog can give you some insight!

So far I’ve had a very positive experience at ARTS/West, it is truly a collaborative work environment! I think it’s brilliant that this venue houses so many activities… there really is something for everyone in the community! I encourage anyone and everyone to pop in and visit us if you’ve never been! Oh man, where has the week gone?! I’ve been meeting with a group of community art leaders for the past three months and we are working on a grant proposal that has kept me pretty busy. There is a lot of exciting coordination going on in the arts. I have also been reading every available report on community building, creative communities, state of the arts reports, etc. Whew.

The Appalachian Progressive Education Center (APE Center) has been among us all week and they are ready to put on their plays: “The Enchanted Necklace” and “Report the Past” on Saturday, July 17, at 1:30. Their performance is free and you’re all invited!

We are very proud to be hosting the Athens Premier of the film “The Other House” July 16, 17 at 7pm both nights. Thank you Amy for trusting us with your film and your family’s story. You can read more about the film and its premier HERE in the Athens News.

ARTS/West presents the local premiere of THE OTHER HOUSE, a movie

ARTS/West, 132 W. State St. is hosting the premiere of The Other House, directed by Steve Fetsch and produced by Amy Abercrombie, on July 16 and 17 at 7:00pm. Tickets to the film screenings are $4 and may be purchased at the door. Stick around after the movie for a reception to follow at 9:00pm on both nights!

The novel, The Other House, was written by Rebecca Hooper Eastman sometime before 1937, the year of her death. Seventy years later, it was privately published by her granddaughter, Amy Abercrombie, and is now an independent, full-length movie. Based on the Holdens and the Hoopers, the story centers on a beautiful young woman forced to flee to the South when a young man dies in a duel over her. She moves in with her sister in Walpole, NH where she encounters colorful relatives, two villains, and a handsome young architect who wins her heart.

"Artwork is my way of telling a story. It is for the most part all that I think about. My paintings are primarily of people. People are vastly different from each other and are always changing. I strive to capture the subject's complexity as well as their personality and beauty. I isolate the subject through color, contrast and composition, thereby making the scene more intimate and insuring that there are no distractions. I am fascinated by subjects that are unaware of the observer and try to portray a feeling of observation without involvement on the part of the viewer.

I paint using powdered pigments mixed with various mediums laid down in thick transparent glazes. This method allows me to mix colors optically by hatching energetic lines of saturated color over a dark under painting.

To me a great painting is visually provocative, well drafted, and ethereally real."

OVST theater camp is rolling right along. They are working hard on producing Jennifer Hickok DeFratis’s play “Fury Tails with a Twist!” You are totally invited to see it on Friday, July 9th, 2010 at 11:00AM! Every aspect of the production is handled by students participating in the camp; this includes the props, costumes, tech, and even acting! We can’t wait!

We also invite you on the evening of July 9th from 6:00-8:00PM to view works by our artist Kenneth Taylor. Here is what he has to say about his artwork:

July 10th brings the triumphant return of Aquabear Live to ARTS/West at 8:00pm and I’ve heard a rumor that there will be hot dogs and rock and roll! What more could you ask for?

The humble play submissions are in and have been sent out to the review committee. We’ve had 18 plays submitted this year from all across the country and we are in the process of whittling them down to 4! Tough work so I’d better get reading!

The Summer of Arts Administration (ARTS/West)

We’re going to try to keep a weekly bloggy update about what we’re doing—we’ll see how it goes. Sometimes the updates will be from Emily, sometimes Ashley, sometimes from our sweet volunteers, workstudy students, and interns. Give us some feedback and led us know what you think!

ARTS/West opened its doors in June of 2005! Five years has gone by pretty fast and we’ve made some stellar improvements to the facility in that time; most notably through our commitment to green operations, sustainability and energy efficiency. We have replaced the windows, boiler and air-conditioning units and installed cork flooring in the basement. We have a recycling program, print mostly on scrap paper, have real cups, plates, dishes and silverware and really frown upon bottled water.

This June we saw the high school graduation of our original Padawans, Theo Peck-Suzuki, Rheal Radwany, Robbie Lane and Rachel Weekely. They are all off to college- we wish them well and will miss them terribly. I am so sorry the smurf birthday cup got broken! And, let us never forget the time we ate pie to celebrate all of your report cards! What are Padawans you say? Well, if you are a nerd like me, they are young jedis but in the ARTS/West context they are middle to high school aged arts administration volunteers. Come fall we will be accepting applications into the Padawan program so: stay tuned.

We are currently hosting OVST’s summer theater youth camp until July 9 then A.P.E. Center moves in for their art camp on July 12. We recently did some calculations and found that ARTS/West is in use an average of 67 hours per week! For a community art center, I’d say you all are doing a really great job. How do you do it with only one full-time and one part-time employee? Volunteers, that’s how! Ashley has just completed the Volunteer Service Program Handbook which will be made available in the next couple of weeks so you can find out what you can do to get involved.

Taking it easy over the summer? Oh my no. There is a lot going on behind the scenes and I cannot wait to tell you about it over the next couple of weeks but it’s time to log-in the Humble Play submissions. Toy Story 3 (ACRN's Radio Chevere)

Yes, merely a week after my goodbye, I've returned to Radio Chevere. But for good reason, I swear. If you haven't seen Toy Story 3 yet, feel free to continue reading. The minor details I'm about to release have no effect on the movie's plot.

In the heat of the rising action, a dramatic switch changes everyone's favorite space ranger, Buzz Lightyear. His reset switch literally transforms Buzz Lightyear into his Spanish-language equivalent. Hilarity ensues!

More blog-worthy, however, is the movie's ending credits. The Gipsy Kings blast a flamenco-fused version of Randy Newman's Oscar-nominated "You've Got a Friend in Me" while Buzz and Jessie tear up the game room floor with a toy-sized dance. Check out the Gipsy Kings perform the song live on Dancing with the Stars! Don't be too impressed though, those professional dancers have got nothing on the Toy Story steppers.

ARTS/West presents Performing Arts Day for Community and GOBA

Purpose Statement:

Kids’ Club: is a performing arts day offered to youth aged 12-18 in Athens, OH. The activities for the Kids’ Club are: prop/backdrop making; story telling and acting techniques; and aspects of technical theater. The end result of each day is a presentation for parents, guardians, and friends. The students are given the opportunity to be: story tellers, actors, technicians, or prop masters for the presentations.

Each Kids’ Club participant is given a course in prop and costume making, acting techniques, story telling, and aspects of light and sound, as related to the story and how these aspects affect a production. All aspects are directly related to the story being told that day. Most items (except for the technical theatrical equipment) used in the presentations are found items such as-plastic bottles, cement mixing buckets, rubber bands, card board tubes, etc. donated scrap paper, donated clothes and fabrics, paints, cardboard boxes, fabric, etc. We hope that this aspect of the day will allow the children to use their imaginations and give them the accessibility to create their own stories at home.

Kids’ Club activities gave participants a chance to be creative, practice their social skills, cooperate, and use team work outside the usual school/day camp atmosphere. This camp encourages participation in the performing arts by breaking down the perception that participation in the arts in not for everyone. When you can put on a play in one afternoon using only found/recycled items—they can go home and put on their own story.

The goal of our arts learning program is to offer an affordable, broad-based approach to performing arts, targeting a diverse group of our regional young people. A facility where students will have the opportunity to put together their own performance while learning how various portions of the arts can work together in support of a common goal, in this case a performance. Through these programs we hope to foster life long participation in the arts.

La Despedida (ACRN's Radio Chevere)

When the lovely people at ACRN first asked me to blog about Spanish music, I was baffled that someone would actually come to me for anything music-related. Let's be honest, nobody knows music like my fellow Rock Lobsters.

My shallow grasp of the Spanish-language music scene was enough for my first couple weeks of blogging. Soon after, I had to search the interwebs for new music just to meet my weekly deadline. I'm happily did it though, because it made me a better blogger. The better understanding has me finally feeling like a true langosta.

Nearly six months after it's inception, Radio Chevere is still going strong. If you haven't learned anything; too bad, because I know I have. But the weekly Spanish lessons are coming to end. As an alum, I will be out of the Lobster-loop. :(

Ending on a happy note, I'm going to Mexico in September! I'll be down there for an internship, but you can be sure that I'll be enjoying the music scene. Who knows, I just might be back for a couple random updates. Hasta luego, familia.

Humble Play Mission Statement

It is the mission of Humble Play: New Play Festival of Appalachia Ohio to promote the art of playwriting while introducing the process of play development to an audience. This is achieved by inviting playwrights to submit their new plays to a committee of judges. These judges chose plays to be produced as staged readings by theater companies for the general public as a once a year, week long festival.

The Corporation for the Performing Arts and ARTS/West announce applications for HUMBLE PLAY: new play festival of Appalachian Ohio

ARTS/West, Athens community gateway to the arts, 132 W. State St., is partnering with the Corporation for the Performing Arts and the Athens Community to present the 5th Annual HUMBLE PLAY: NEW PLAY FESTIVAL OF APPALACHIAN OHIO, this coming October 5-9, 2010, and they are pleased to invite submissions from playwrights.

Acknowledging gifted writers with new plays that speak to a regional audience, ARTS/West will open its doors for these new works October 5-9, 2010.

The 2009 Festival featured: Romeo and Juliet; there Hasn’t Been a Rap Song Yet! by Rheal Radwany (Athens, Ohio) A Case Is Never Closed by J. Boyer (Tempe, AZ) Touch by Drew Larinore (Brooklyn, NY) An Elegant Solution by Celeste Parsons (Athens, Ohio), Apologia by Katharine Bolger (New York, NY), Japanese Schoolgirl Night and Knuckleheads by James McLindon (Northampton, MA).

PARTICIPATION: We are seeking plays that will highlight the work of playwrights from across the nation and will, in turn, highlight the actors and directors of Appalachia generally and Southeastern Ohio specifically through play development/production in our area, at the ARTS/West facility during the festival.

For many, the traditional Western will evoke images of cowboys galloping atop their mounts, roping cattle, fighting for territory and swilling whiskey in smoke-filled saloons. Stories portraying such scenes have been prominent for decades, both in the canon of American literature and on the movie sets of Hollywood. Fans of the genre owe many thanks to the Zanesville, Ohio native Zane Grey, an unapologetic adventurer and author who helped define the American Western through his voluminous number of written works.
