New Research LibGuides (CommBlog)

As the quarter begins, don’t forget to check for a LibGuide to refer to when it comes to research. What’s a LibGuide? LibGuides are research guides on various topics, written by OU librarians. The tags on the LibGuides home page will get you started. There is also a subject and A-Z index if you prefer. I’m happy to say that I am all moved in and excited to start the school year. Since I took a break for the summer, I haven’t written an entry for months, so it feels great to be posting again!

While I don’t have any style updates at the moment (although I see that Ray Ban Wayfarers are quickly taking over Court Street!), I just wanted to get a post out there to let everyone know that this blog and Thread Magazine are up and running again for fall quarter! We all can’t wait to get started on the first issue and put out an amazing fall mag.

Until then, I’ll be busy brainstorming ideas, so make sure to look out for my brand new post – COMING SOON!

Special Series on Teaching Social Media in J-Schools (CommBlog)

PBS’s MediaShift blog is running a new series this week and next called “Beyond J-School” that will explore trends in journalism education in the digital age. (Thanks to my colleague, OU biz librarian Chad Boeninger for calling it to my attention) This post made several references to social media (along with technology) being one of [...]
PBS’s MediaShift blog is running a new series this week and next called “Beyond J-School” that will explore trends in journalism education in the digital age. (Thanks to my colleague, OU biz librarian Chad Boeninger for calling it to my attention)

This post made several references to social media (along with technology) being one of the major themes at this year’s AEJMC conference in Denver. No surprise there. I attended that conference (my first AEJMC!) and saw some of that theme in action, although not as a participant!*

Reading this got me thinking that social media is probably a theme at just about every professional conference right now. Everyone is dealing with how to incorporate social media not only into education but work, services, public relations, you name it. The American Library Association annual conference this Summer was no exception.

Speaking of ALA, I attended an interesting session there called “News Literacy and Preservation: Finding, Using, and Losing the News” in which representatives from NPR, the Washington Post and the College & Research Libraries discussed news archiving opportunities & challenges in the digital age. The role of social media in news gathering was discussed by presenter Meg Smith, a Washington Post researcher. Smith said that social media is growing in importance for news sourcing, and described her experiences using social media to gather eyewitness accounts & sources for stories on the Virginia Tech tragedy. She added that journalistic ethics still need to be maintained as social networks are used for news sourcing.

Another point that came out of this session was that the “next frontier” in social media use will be to define the academic value in social network archives. Its apparent that the Library of Congress is aware of this value. In their announcement earlier this year about the Library’s decision to archive Twitter, the LOC referred to the “scholarly and research implications” as part of the reasoning behind the Library’s involvement in building the archive. So I guess I’d better keep on twittering!

*Although I had planned on blogging and twittering all through the conference on my new smart phone, not very much of that happened in reality. However, I did succeed in reading the #AEJMC10 twitter feed a few times and connecting with another journalism librarian (who was not even at the conference!)

Check out MediaShift blog author Alfred Hermida’s other posts about journalism education
