(Photo by Lauren Pond/Ohio University Libraries)

Having served for a year as Interim Head of Information Technology, Preston was familiar with the operations in the department. A voracious learner, she is self-taught in computer programming languages like HTML, CSS, elementary JavaScript, jQuery, BASIC and AutoIt Windows automation language. Her special aptitude for written communication made her an outstanding candidate for the position, one that functions heavily around using precise language to relay information between the Libraries and the University’s Office of Information Technology.

“It is important to have a person who will do well in representing the Libraries’ cause,” said Eileen Theodore-Shusta, director of planning, assessment and organizational effectiveness.

Having completed a Master of Library Science in Information at the University of Michigan, Preston has a solid understanding of how libraries function.

“Technology is a particularly broad and fast-changing area of library services. The Libraries must manage many pieces – the Libraries Web site, ArticlesPlus, ALICE, various databases, services such as chat reference and interlibrary loan, and the Libraries’ own computers and printers, to name a few – while presenting a unified and user-friendly gateway to our students, faculty and staff,” said Preston. “I hope my library science background helps us to manage our technology staff and services in ways most beneficial to the Libraries.”

According to Preston, the new position has helped her learn more about the complex infrastructure that supports the Libraries Web sites and computing services.

“I’m still learning and hope to increase my computer programming and support skills in the future,” Preston said.

A hearty congratulations and best wishes to Carrie for her new position with the Ohio University Libraries.

Then, on June 1, 48 Bobcats boarded the Catawba Queen in Mooresville, N.C., for a Charlotte Alumni Dinner Cruise. The Ohio University Libraries won Best of Show at the American Library Association’s 2013 PR Xchange event for two of its brochures.

The Best of Show awards recognize the best communications materials created by libraries within the past year. This June, OHIO Libraries will be celebrated at the 2013 American Library Association annual conference in Chicago, IL. The Libraries’ “Endowments to Enhance Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Research” won best of show for fundraising materials, while “A Sense of Place: Frederick Harris’ Sumi-e Paintings” was honored under special programs, exhibits and events.

The Libraries’ endowments brochure was put together by a team of Libraries staff, student employees and individuals who include Dean’s Office: Scott Seaman, Kate Mason and Doug Partusch; Graduate Assistants: Lena Chapin, Sherry Dibari and Patrick Traylor; and Graphic Designer Tina Ullman. The brochure individually details the purpose of the Libraries’ endowments, each of which supports academic excellence.

The Harris brochure honors an exhibit of work by the late Dr. Frederick Harris, a designer and artist who spent a majority of his life living and working in Japan. Harris donated collections of his personal Japanese sumi-e artwork as well as his collected works.
This brochure was a team effort by Arts and Archives: Gary Ginther and Sara Harrington; Dean’s Office: Scott Seaman and Kate Mason; Graduate Assistants: Lena Chapin and Patrick Traylor; and UCM Graphic Designer Mark Krumel.

Special thanks to libraries staff Carrie Preston and Rob Dakin, who served as editors for both of the brochures.

Notable News from the Libraries’ Staff (Alden Library)

Summer is here, and many Ohio University students have left town, leaving the campus peaceful and calm. This is not to say that Ohio University Libraries’ staff has disappeared though. From the spring semester through present day, the Libraries’ staff continues to contribute to the wealth of research existing throughout Ohio University and the nation. Here is a look at some of their recent accomplishments.

The Department of Academic Affairs Awards Committee at the Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine (HCOM) selected the 2012 Academic Affairs Outstanding Employees of the Year. The Libraries’ very own, Debi Orr, Learning Resource Center/health sciences librarian, was one of the three winners. The Learning Resource Center (LRC) supports the curricula of HCOM. As LRC librarian, Orr assists with finding resources as well as with library access issues. Orr is also the subject librarian for Applied Health Sciences and Wellness, Nursing, Osteopathic Medicine, Rehabilitation and Communication Sciences, and Social and Public Health.

Three members of the Libraries’ staff were awarded the 2013 RPC Research Grant from the American Library Association of Ohio. Hilary Bussell, eLearning librarian, Chris Guder, reference and instruction librarian, and Jessica Hagman, reference and instruction librarian, are using this grant to support their project titled, “Informed Instruction: A Needs Assessment Model for Library Workshop Implementation.” The study seeks to explore the information needs of on-campus graduate students and graduate distance learners to understand whether or not there is a need for out-of-class instruction for both kinds of graduate students.

The Libraries were also featured in the April 2013 issue of College and Research Libraries News: News From the Field. The announcement, co-authored by Kate Mason, coordinator of communications and assistant to the dean, and Krithika Rajaraman, graduate communications assistant, announced the Libraries’ interactive, searchable digital archive of Senator George V. Voinovich’s senatorial and gubernatorial collections. The Omeka-based website has teaching and learning capabilities ideal for scholars and researchers from around the globe.

Dr. Stuart C. Blersch gifts $400,000 to The Roma King and Neville Rogers Scholarship (English Department News)

Dr. Stuart C. Blersch began his undergraduate work at Ohio University in 1963 as a student in the pilot program of the Honors College (now the Honors Tutorial College). He received his B.A. in 1967, but as an outstanding student, he had been allowed to begin graduate studies in English during his senior year, before completing his undergraduate requirements. He received his M.A. in 1968 while also serving as a teaching assistant in the Department. After two years of Ph.D. work at the University of South Carolina he returned to the English Department at Ohio University in 1970 and received his Ph.D. in 1975.

The Roma King and Neville Rogers Scholarship assists doctoral students writing dissertations in either Literary Studies or Rhetoric and Composition. Dr. Blersch's $400,000 estate gift is the largest single donation the department has ever received.

For more information, see MaryKate McHugh's article on Dr. Blersch in Compass, which can be found here.

Congratulations to Leah Graysmith, Hillery Glasby and Amanda Hayes! (English Department News)

Leah (pictured left) was awarded the Earl and Margaret Shively Scholarship for the 2012-13 academic year.

Leah is a fourth-year doctoral candidate in Literature. Her scholarly focus has continually come back to the study of gender and sexuality and the role that animals play in defining these concepts, as demonstrated in her Master's thesis, “Sex and Gender in the Equine in Literature,” which looked at how horses in literature represent and reflect human sexuality. The topics of chivalry and courtly love, the influence of the fairy kingdom, animal characters, and Chaucer's work on Venus, will no doubt always be a big part of what she wrestles and plays with.

Hillery (pictured right) won both the Philip and Kathleen Emily Tice Award for the best graduate essay in criticism for her paper entitled “A State(lessness) of Queer Unbelonging in Before Night Falls: Arenas as Castro’s Social Outlaw” and the Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award for the English Department.

Hillery is a second-year doctoral candidate in Rhetoric and Composition. Her research interests center around the intersections of queer theory and composition studies, queer rhetorics, and critical, queer, and liberatory pedagogies. Hillery also enjoys critical theory and transnational studies, which bridge her Rhetoric and Composition concentration with her love of literature and activism. Her aim in the classroom, and in her scholarship, is to tie theory to practice in the vein of social justice. In the classroom, Hillery enacts liberatory and critical pedagogies in her classrooms. She focuses her First Year composition class around the rhetorical ecology of the anti-GLBTQ bullying movement, creating writing projects that marry the study of rhetoric with alternate composing processes and form(at)s. Her attempts to queer the composition classroom, in both content and form, result in task-based multimodal and hybrid texts that engage students in innovative and imaginative composition. Similarly, her Junior composition class analyzes the rhetorical underpinnings of social activism and political movements through the study of Revolution(ary) Rhetoric.

Amanda (not pictured) won the Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award for the College of Arts and Sciences.

Amanda Hayes is a fourth-year doctoral candidate in Rhetoric and Composition. Her studies focus on Appalachian rhetorics, and her teaching centers on place-based pedagogy, which theorizes that places are rhetorically constructed and also shape people and cultures in various ways. Her most recent composition course looked at Athens as a site of multiple and at times competing discourses, which students studied and analyzed via readings and personal experiences.

Renee Behnam and Kristina Deonaldo also deserve praise, as they each earned honorable mention for the Philip and Kathleen Emily Tice Award—Renee for her essay “Frustrated Charity and the Value of Independence in Frances Burney’s Cecilia” and Kristina for her essay “The Economic Migrant in Henry James’s A Passionate Pilgrim.”

The Black Alumni Reunion is the largest formal alumni reunion at Ohio University, and for good reason: African-American students and faculty have forged strong bonds unique to their experiences, said Francine Childs, professor emerita of African American studies.
“When I came here, there weren’t that many African-American faculty and staff and no administrators,” said Childs, who was a popular professor and student ally in the 1970s and ’80s.
